KOUYOU
KOUYOU, established in 1907 by its first-generation master Kiyomura Kinpou, traces its origins to Asakusa, a vibrant hub for doll crafting.
With a legacy rooted in over 200 years of traditional techniques, Kouyo honors its heritage while incorporating modern materials to create exceptional works. Their offerings include Hina dolls, May dolls, Ichimatsu dolls, and New Year’s decorations.
To ensure these beloved dolls can be treasured for generations, KOUYOU also provides expert repair services.
KOUYOU shares the intricate artistry of karakuri dolls (mechanical puppets) carried on Owari festival floats, which date back to the mid-Edo period (1716-1800), as well as the region’s renowned traditional handcrafting techniques, known as "Tewaza." Celebrated as a treasure trove of folk art, these crafts are promoted globally by KOUYOU, inspiring appreciation, fostering demand, and nurturing the next generation of artisans. The company collaborates with skilled craftspeople across Japan, incorporating fabrics such as Kyoto Nishijin textiles, Nagoya Yuzen dyeing, and Arimatsu shibori (tie-dyeing) into its unique creations.
One of KOUYOU’s most meaningful initiatives is upcycling cherished kimonos into custom-made dolls, allowing customers to rediscover their beloved garments in a new and treasured form. By working with artisans from diverse regions and disciplines, KOUYO continues to innovate new "Tewaza" techniques, enriching both cultural heritage and the hearts of its customers.
