KOUYOU

KOUYOU was founded in 1907 in Asakusa, a vibrant center for doll-making, by the first-generation artisan, Kiyomura Kinpou.
With a legacy rooted in over 200 years of traditional techniques, KOUYOU honors its heritage while incorporating modern materials to create exceptional works. Their offerings include Hina dolls, May dolls, Ichimatsu dolls, and New Year’s decorations. To ensure these beloved dolls can be treasured for generations, KOUYOU also provides expert repair services.

KOUYOU celebrates the intricate artistry of karakuri ningyo (mechanical dolls) used on festival floats, a tradition dating back to the mid-Edo period (1716–1800). Alongside this, KOUYOU upholds the region’s renowned TEWAZA* craftsmanship. These treasures of folk art are promoted globally by KOUYOU, inspiring admiration, stimulating demand, and nurturing the next generation of artisans.
By incorporating prestigious fabrics like Kyoto Nishijin weaving, Nagoya Yuzen dyeing, and Arimatsu Shibori (tie-dyeing), KOUYOU collaborates with skilled artisans across Japan to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

One of KOUYOU's most meaningful endeavors is upcycling precious kimonos into bespoke dolls, allowing customers to rediscover their sentimental value in a new and cherished form. By collaborating with artisans from various regions and disciplines, KOUYOU continues to innovate TEWAZA techniques, enriching cultural heritage and touching the hearts of our customers.

*TEWAZA refers to handcrafted items made using advanced techniques and expert craftsmanship.
